Case Studies on Global Economic Development

So many anti-poverty efforts involve giving the poor something they don't have money or food. Another approach is to remove the barriers that make it hard for the poor to help themselves and to flourish. This book is about the crucial role think tanks play in removing those barriers.

Russ Roberts, Stanford University's Hoover Institution, EconTalk

What happens when a tariff on laptops in Argentina is removed?

What happens when street vendors in India are legalized?

What happens when police in the United States are no longer allowed to seize cash without due process?

People working to solve their own poverty start to succeed.

The traditional approach to solving poverty needs to change. Until now, people in wealthy, educated places have tried to solve poverty for people living in poorer regions. That's backward. Real solutions to poverty are discovered by individuals and local communities  not by outsiders. We need to follow their lead.

Poverty and Freedom demonstrates how, in countries around the world, those of us who want to make a difference can and should support local initiatives that empower people by removing institutional barriers that limit their freedom.
The case studies in this volume showcase the inspiring work of local think tanks committed to expanding freedom for vulnerable populations across the globe.
